The Routine

I get a lot of questions about it, so here it is.

I follow the below routine every few days for defined, untangled, manageable, natural hair. I find this technique works for my lifestyle since it is quick, easy, stylish and fitting for any occasion.

Pre-prep note: If you choose to try this routine, before starting the first step for the first time, make sure your hair is free of all products and knots for a fresh start.

Side Note: Not recommended for all, but may be worth a try for you.

STEP 1: Wash hair during morning shower.
Separate hair into quarter sections, dividing into four parts evenly at the crown of the head. Rinse sections then add Shea Moisture® Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo. Lather and rinse.

STEP 2: Condition hair.

Add Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibuscus Conditioner to each section. (Suave Naturals Conditioner is a cheaper alternative).

STEP 3: Detangle.
Using a large-toothed comb, gently detangle each section from tip to root.  Then rinse out while you continue to detangle.

STEP 4: Moisturize.

Reapply a small amount of the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Conditioner (or Suave Naturals Conditioner) throughout hair.  (Note:These are "wash out" conditioners, but you will use it as a leave-in for this routine).

Wrap hair and exit shower.

Add Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie throughout hair, focusing on the edges, along with Eco Styler Gel with Argon Oil.  Work into the hair without separating the curls to create definition.

STEP 5: Blow dry.
Blow dry each section on warm (not hot)/high speed for 3 minutes.  Natural curls will look more defined the dryer they get, but do not over dry.

STEP 6: Gel and set (optional*).
Add gel to the front edges of your hair and style. There are a number of ways to set your edges, depending on your hair type or desired style. Try any of the following options:

  1. Wrap a narrow silk scarf tightly around the edge of the hairline and allow gel to dry underneath for about 10 minutes. Remove scarf.

  2. Gel and blow dry edges while holding hair tightly to the head.

  3. Gel and clip hair back without wrapping or blow drying. This will allow your edges to dry slowly with a natural wave.

You can now wear your hair out as is, add a flower if you’d like, clip up the sides to create a faux hawk or one side for a half faux hawk…style anyway you want without much need of manipulation.
